about

Artist, cultural worker and executive director of the non-profit Liberation House, Jonathan Lykes, is excited to announce the release of "The Black Joy Experience Vol. 2: Comrade,” a 16-track music compilation featuring liberation anthems and freedom songs that celebrate the Black and Queer experience.

“The Black Joy Experience Vol. 2: Comrade” is a rousing, uplifting sonic journey that, according to Lykes “carries on the aim for social justice that our ancestors started.” Case in point, the lead single and video, “Ella Baker Shaker,” is a high-energy tribute to the 1960s civil rights activist and features the Queen of New Orleans Bounce herself, Big Freedia.

“We have to recognize who came before us,” says Big Freedia of Ella Baker Shaker. “There’s been lots of discussion about justice and healing,” says Big Freedia. “Sometimes joy gets lost in all of it.

Ultimately Lykes says he hopes that this series (there will be more to come this year) will amplify resistance through music, art and cultural production, and adds that “the Black Joy Experience Series is a loving invitation for you to join the pursuit and defining of our collective liberation”
